![]() My intent is to keep this photography blog advertising free. All images in the article were produced from RAW files using my standard process of DxO PhotoLab, CS6 and the Nik Collection. Nikon 1 V3 + 1 Nikon CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 189mm, efov 510mm, f/5.6, 1/1250, ISO-250Īll photographs were captured hand-held in available light using Nikon 1 gear as per the EXIF data. An important difference between the images was that the heron images needed some fairly aggressive crops compared to the gull photograph. The gull image below was processed using the same ‘V3 standard bird preset’ that was applied to the Great Blue Heron Images. It really is that simple. As you become more familiar with the adjustments available in DxO PhotoLab or OpticsPro you may decide to create multiple presets based on subject matter, lighting, camera body or lens used. It takes a bit of effort to initially set up your presets but they will save you hours down the road when working in post. Nikon 1 V3 + 1 Nikon CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 300mm, efov 810mm, f/5.6, 1/1250, ISO-160Īfter you name the preset, save it, and then it will be ready for future use. ![]() Once you do that a window will open that will allow you to name that specific preset. Nikon 1 V3 + 1 Nikon CX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 300mm, efov 810mm, f/5.6, 1/1250, ISO-160Īfter you have all of the settings in DxO PhotoLab or OpticsPro completed for the sample image, click on “Image” in the menu across the top of the page, then click on “Create preset from current settings”. If you plan on finishing your images in PhotoLab or OpticsPro you would fine tune your presets beyond what I typically do with mine. These adjustments are designed to bring typical bird images close to where they need to be so I can make final adjustments to them in CS6 and the Nik Collection. My ‘V3 standard bird preset’ includes: Highlights -20, Shadows +10, auto Micro-Contrast, PRIME noise reduction, Lens Sharpness Global 1.20, and Lens Sharpness Detail 70. For example, I set up a ‘V3 standard bird preset’, which I used for all of the images in this article. Using the various sliders execute the adjustments to the photograph that you want to make ‘standard’ with that particular preset you are creating. I always allow the program to make its typical ‘auto adjustments’ based on the camera body and lens used to capture the image as this automatically takes care of things like lens distortions. The next step is to open up a RAW file in DxO PhotoLab (or OpticsPro). Working with additional programs will likely affect how you set up your preset. The first step in setting up a preset is to determine if you plan to finish your image in PhotoLab/OpticsPro, or if you will be exporting it into another program like Lightroom or Photoshop for additional corrections. All of the Great Blue Heron images are from a single AFC run captured at 10 fps, shooting in Manual mode with Auto ISO 160-3200, using Continuous Auto Focus with Subject Tracking, and Vibration Reduction turned off. The photographs used in this article were captured yesterday afternoon during a very short visit to Hendrie Valley. This short article provides simple instructions on how to create a preset in DxO PhotoLab or OpticsPro. ![]() Many photographers look for ways to save time in post, while also creating images with a consistent ‘look’ that they prefer. I found out the hard way that if you accidentally delete that complicated mask on a layer that took a long time to draw, you can’t undo that and get it back. Furthermore, some actions appear to not record in the Undo-Redo log, such as deleting a mask. ![]() There’s the basic Undo and Redo menu actions, but there’s no multi-step undoing and no visual record of what’s happening to the image being edited. Apparently professionals don’t make mistakes and don’t care to one-click check before and after versions of their complex, multi-step changes. One of the more glaring omissions is having no History panel. The first place I looked was the Preferences window, however I was stopped dead in my tracks at the only two tabs on the screen: General and Rulers. There’s a sizable amount missing from an editor considered “Pro” by name. While the interface looks aesthetically pleasing, once work began on photo editing I started to notice Pixelmator Pro begin to unravel in its functionality. Pixelmator’s statement on the issue is that they “feel a dark interface works best for editing images,” continuing, “but we haven’t ruled out a light option in the future.” Functionality Nino Batista has a great article to explore more on the subject if you are interested. Dark interfaces also strain my eyes more because my pupils have to stay wide open to gather more light, just like when forced to read paragraphs of white on black text. Generally, a middle gray is what I find best for photo editing a dark interface will usually result in darker images since they appear to be lighter than what they actually are in comparison to the surrounding darkness. ![]() ![]() Combined with low contrast gray tool icons and text, your eyes are in for a workout if you spend a lot of time editing. The non-optional near-black interface is definitely going to be a turn off for some users. This same technique is also used in Fast Charging. If your battery has discharged to 6V and you have connected it with a 12V voltage source, it will start to charge quickly, and as it approaches 12V, the charging speed will drop significantly. (An expensive one by FLUKE for serious sh*t) Quick Tip: Get yourself this inexpensive voltage meter by Amazon Basics to properly check your battery voltages while you charge and discharge it. The charging rate is also directly proportional to the voltage difference. This means that if a 12 V battery got discharged and went down to 6V, as soon as you connect a voltage source above 6, it will start charging. The charging starts as soon as the potential difference rises. Once the voltage goes up to 12 V, it starts charging. It will charge when the voltage surpasses the battery voltage. The battery will not charge at this voltage. I have applied 12V because the battery we are charging is also rated at 12V.Ī 12V battery is attached with a variable voltage source having Zero Volt Output. However, once the voltage source is switched on to 12.0V, it’s charging. In the first setup on the left, the voltage source is 0V, so the battery is not charging yet. A rechargeable battery is connected with a variable voltage source by connecting the positive terminal of the voltage source with the battery’s positive terminal and the negative terminal of the voltage source with the battery’s negative terminal. To understand it better, check the image below. The basic science of charging any rechargeable battery is to provide the rated voltage of the battery at both terminals by connecting the positive terminal of the voltage source with the positive terminal of the battery you are charging and the negative terminal of the voltage source with the negative terminal of the battery you are charging. How to charge any battery without a charger? The science behind charging a Li-ion battery is the same as charging any rechargeable (this is important) battery. The science behind charging a cordless battery is the same as charging a Li-ion battery with a charger. ![]() You can also use a 12V solar panel to charge a battery without a charger. You can also use a laptop charger for an 18V or 20V drill battery or AA cells attached in series or another drill battery or a balance lipo charger. Using a variable DC voltage source is also a very reliable way to charge any rechargeable battery. You can charge a battery without a charger using a car battery if both are rated at 12V. This blog post will discuss how to charge a cordless drill battery or any battery without its official charger. In a worst-case scenario, the battery charger can die for various reasons. Therefore, every manufacturer provides a dedicated charger for the batteries, often inside the package. In fact, the Transformers Wiki credits Griffin-Bacal with the emblem design: Since Hasbro's internal marketing department and the Griffin-Bacal agency are credited by Dunsay with developing the Toy Fair materials, and he states that Marvel didn't have input on the aesthetics of the toy line for the first two years, I think we can assume that someone at Hasbro or Griffin-Bacal was responsible for the design of the logo and, at the very least, the Autobot emblem. As such, it seems clear that the logo was conceived as part of this "rushed" promotional material, if not earlier. It's clear that they needed final art for the toys at an early date - the logo and "battle scene" art used in the Toy Fair catalog are essentially identical to the versions later used on the toy packaging. Here he's referring to the aesthetics of the toy line, not the comic book or cartoon based on the toys. The same product with two colors was an attempt to make the line look bigger. I don't remember Marvel having anything to say about any aesthetics the first year or so. Some product and color changes were made at that late date. So we were continuing to develop the product after the catalogs and commercials were done. Griffin-Bacal was the marketing agency run by Tom Griffin and Joe Bacal, who handled branding and advertising for many of Hasbro's major toy lines at the time, including Transformers. Here he refers to obtaining the license and tooling for Diaclone and Microchange toys from Takara in mid-1983, preparing for industry previews by fall 1983, and preparing for Toy Fair 1984 the following February. They were printed six months before actual production (for US Toy Fair), and so were commercials. Considering the time constraints, R&D, marketing and Griffin-Bacal did 16 months work in 4-5. Trade previews were in October/November, so we had to rush. Remember: We picked these items up in June and didn't get really working on them till July. ![]() George Dunsay, Hasbro's senior VP of research & development at the time, said in an interview: (these photos were archived from an ebay auction of the catalog itself)Īt this point, Hasbro was certainly preparing for the September debut of the Transformers cartoon and comic book, but it seems that the marketing materials for the toys were the first thing produced. ![]() ![]() To the best of my knowledge, the first use of the Autobot emblem (as well as the Transformers logo, which it was so often used alongside) is in Hasbro's 1984 Toy Fair catalog (distributed in February 1984, at Toy Fair). Griffin-Becal was the Ad Agency at the time, and did create the launch advertising and promotions, but not the Branding and Consumer Packaging. I also commissioned the original artwork for the packaging, which was done with several artists due to the tight turnaround time, and was the creator of the bio card on the back of pack. The original package launched in red for Autobots, and Purple for Deceptions to convey the good versus evil theme. The inspiration for the icons was the actual molded heads in the toy sculptures. I remember getting cartons of the original Takara Packaging (in Japanese) and having to figure out how to transform the toys, and translate that to the American market. CLS&M was a branding and consumer packaging firm, and we were doing a lot of packaging work for Hasbro. I, Wayne Molinare was the original designer of the Transformer Logo, Autobot and Deception Icons, and Packaging for Hasbro.Īt the time I was an Art Director at Coleman, Lipuma, Segal & Morrill (CLS&M) in NYC.
